A utilização de fluxogramas é antiga no mundo das organizações no país. Já nas décadas de 1950 e 1960 surgia o fluxograma como um instrumento útil no estudo e na ação das organizações. Contudo, o uso de fluxogramas na atual gestão de processos sofre restrições. Uma dessas restrições é: o fato de que não existe gestão de processos com a simples aplicação do fluxograma, pois ele apenas registra, na maioria dos modelos de fluxogramas, um único processo, e raramente menciona alguma correspondência com outros processos.
